The 6th International Chess Tournament, dedicated to the memory of Georgy Agzamov, the first grandmaster of Uzbekistan, will be held in Tashkent from March 5th (arrival) till March 15th (departure).
Registration will take place on March 5th, 2012 from 10.00 in the building of the Republican Chess Club (Pakhtakor stadium). The official hotel and the venue of the tournament is Shodlik Palace.
The total prize fund is 20,000 USD, with 5,000 USD reserved for the winner. Last year champion was GM Tigran L Petrosian from Armenia.
Russian Grandmaster Alexander Morozevich won the Vladimir Petrov Memorial, which was held in Jurmala, Latvia, by collecting 5 points from seven games in the final stage of the competition.
Morozevich won four games and lost only against the host GM Alexei Shirov. Great success for the young Ukrainian GM Igor Kovalenko who shared the second place with 4.5 points.

The 10th Khazar International Chess Open Tournaments A (+2100), B (-2100), C (Women) D (Youth U 14) is taking place from 29th February to 7th March in Rasht, Iran.
103 players from eight countries, including 12 Grandmasters, compete in the 11-round Swiss in Open A.
Russian GM Oleg Korneev started furiously and is topping the standings with perfect score after five rounds. Local IM Pouya Idani is half a point behind and there follows a large tie on the shared 3rd place.
The prize fund is as follows: Tournament A -$11,500, Tournament B – $4050, Tournament C – $3100 Tournament D – $1800. The winner of the A Tournament gets $3000.

The 28th International Open Cappelle la Grande is taking place on 3-10th March 2012 at the Palais des arts in Cappelle la Grande, France. 490 players are participating.
The popular tournament features the prize fund of 30,000 EUR and starts immediately after the 11th Rochefort Chess Open, making it convenient for the players to combine participation in two events.
The Magistral Ciudad de Buenos Aires will take place between 28th May and 3rd June and will feature the stellar presence of the elite player Alexei Shirov, who was once rated 4th in the world rankings.
With the best players of Argentine and Uruguayan champion Andres Rodriguez the tournament has average elo of 2558, reaching Category 13 according to FIDE.

В Леоне началось традиционное соревнование, в котором в этот раз сыграют Веселин Топалов (2752, 12-я позиция в мировом рейтинг-листе) и Франциско Вальехо (2697, 52-я позиция в мировом рейтинг-листе). Соперникам предстоит провести шесть партий с контролем 45 минут на партию полюс 15 секунд на ход каждому участнику. В прошлом году в подобном матче встречались Виши Ананд и Алексей Широв ( со счетом 4,5:1,5 победил чемпион мира).
Несмотря на внушительную разницу в рейтинге, Вальехо традиционно не самый удобный соперник для болгарского гроссмейстера (секундантом которого он являлся до 2009 года), и начало встречи сложилось в пользу хозяина поля. Что касается Леона, то например Гельфанд в 2010-м прежде чем порвать в финале Ароняна 4-2 вначале с трудом преодолел Пако 3,5:2,5
Paco Vallejo finally lifted the trophy in Leon, after defeating one of the greatest chess players of the world, the former champion Veselin Topalov, in the 6-games rapid match.
Vallejo secured the overall victory by scoring a full point in the 5th game of the match. Topalov won the last game for the final score 3.5-2.5 in favour of Vallejo. This result is a huge confidence boost for the Minorcan, who is at the age for the greatest chess performances.

Молодые ребята очень талантливы. На мой взгляд, Вашье-Лаграв постоянно немного не добирает. Думаю, он играет сильнее, чем показывает его рейтинг – реально где-то на 2750. Но у него какая-то неудачная полоса, он играет несколько вяловато, все время «копошится» в зоне 2710-2720. Хотя видно, что он сильный игрок: и считает хорошо, и понимание неплохое. На мой взгляд, он уже шахматист «подэлитного» уровня.

понятие элиты в которую не входит Топа не выдерживает никакой критики и не имеет никакого практического смысла.

совсем недавно шахматист из 3-го десятка по цифирькам сыграл на равных в классику 12 партий с чемпионом входящиим по этим же цифирькам в пятерку.
на мой взгляд это более чем очевидная иллюстрация условности всех эти рейтингов и надуманности этих сословий и каст подэлита, межэлита, супероберэлита.

Chalkida Chess Academy “Palamedes of Evia” hosted a friendly chess match between Turkish Grandmaster Suat Atalik and his wife IM/WGM Ekaterina Atalik in Halkida, Greece between 7th and 9th August.
This unique event is the first ever chess match between husband and wife, who also happen to be the winners (overall and women’s category respectively) of the previous edition of Negroponte Open in 2010.
The match consisted of two classical games, four rapid games and eight blitz games.
Suat Atalik won both games with the classical time control 90+30”. There followed rapid games with 15+10” where Suat Atalik achieved another victory 3,5-0,5.
However, the in the blitz match Ekaterina Atalik kept the balance and this section ended up 4-4. The overall result is Suat Atalik 9,5 – Ekaterina Atalik 4,5.
Alexander Areshchenko won the 2012 edition of the Botvinnik Memorial in St. Petersburg, Russia. Areshchenko finished with 7,0/9, the same points as seven other chess players – Valerij Popov, Vadim Zvjaginsev, Evgeny Romanov, Ernesto Inarkiev, Ildar Khairullin, Boris Kharchenko, and Maxim Matlakov, but the Ukranian Grandmaster won the golden medal on better tiebreak.
Russian Chess Federation, Tatarstan Ministry of Sport and Tatarstan Chess Federation are organizing the 34th Rashid Nezhmetdinov Cup from 25th September to 4th October in Kazan.
The tournament is also marking the centenary of Nezhmetdinov’s birth.
The tournament will be played over 9 rounds of Swiss system and is valid for the Russian Cup. Draw offers are not allowed before 40th move.
The total prize fund is 12,400 EUR and the winner will earn 2500 EUR. There are 10 regular prizes and special prizes for women, juniors and seniors.
On 29th and 30th September there will be a rapid tournament. Details should be announced on the official website.
