A very special tournament will take place in San Sebastian from 28th of December till 6th of January. The program includes A, B, C tournaments and blitz competition.
It is devoted to the famous chess tournament which was held one century ago in San Sebastian and won by Jos Ral Capablanca.
A and B tournaments will be played by using a new “Basque System”.
The prize fund of the event is 100 000 euro (the first prize is 20 000 euro + electric motorbike).
The list of participants includes 10 players rated over 2700.

The 9-round Swiss event featured a prize fund of 8000 EUR with 2000 EUR dedicated to the winner. 155 players competed and among them were seven Grandmasters.
Andrei Volokitin became a winner of Donostia chess festival. In the final match he defeated Viktor Laznichka with 2:0 score. The match was very tough and pressure became so high that Czech player just simply forgot about time in one of the games where he played with Black. The rook ending was equal and few moves earlier Andrei Volokitin proposed a draw which was declined by Viktor Laznichka.
After the accident with time Czech Grand Master was not able to concentrate on the other game any more and blundered an exchange few moves later. Andrei Voliktin grabs 20,000 euro and big motorbike.
The Estonian Sports Association Kalev organized the 21st Paul Keres Memorial on 6-8th January in Tallinn, Estonia.
The Preliminary 7-round Swiss tournament with the time control 15+10” was held on Friday and Saturday. Top four finishers qualified for the Main tournament which was played on Sunday. 86 players competed, full standings bellow.
The Main tournament was 8-player round robin with the time control 15+10”. Four players from the Preliminary event were joined by four invited players: Alexei Shirov, Jaan Ehlvest, Tomi Nyback and Kaido Kulaots.
Alexei Shirov defended the last year’s title and earned another trophy, but only after edging GM Vladimir Fedosejev on tie-break. Shirov won three games, including the one against Fedosejev, drew four and finished undefeated.

Российский шахматист Игорь Лысый выиграл первый этап Кубка России - турнир Moscow Open, который завершился в Москве в воскресенье.
Лысый в заключительной партии белыми фигурами за 90 ходов нанес поражение лидировавшему после 8 туров соотечественнику Дмитрию Кокареву и набрал 7,5 очка, на 0,5 очка опередив Кокарева и еще двух россиян Эрнесто Инаркиева и Юрия Елисеева.
The Latvian Chess Federation in cooperation with Grandmaster Alexei Shirov organized the Aivars Gipslis Memorial on Sunday 12th February at the Technical University in Riga, Latvia.
The tournament is organized to commemorate Aivars Gipslis, eight-times Latvian champion and respected Grandmaster.
The competition was held over 9 rounds of Swiss System 9 rounds, with rapid time control of 10 minutes + 3 seconds per player. The prize fund was 360 EUR.
Alexei Shirov took a clear first place with 8 points, followed by fellow Latvian GM Normunds Miezis who finished half a point behind.
Guest from Spain, GM Manuel Perez Candelario, clinched the third place on better tie-break.
he tournament will be supported by the family of Vladimir Petrov among others. The Vladimir Petrov Memorial replaces previously announced but unfortunately canceled the Tal Memorial and the event keeps all the original terms – the schedule, the venue, the prize fund and the invited players.
The tournament will be held in Jurmala, Latvia, from Feb. 15 (arrival) to Feb. 20 (departure), 2012. The exact venues of the separate tournaments have been changed and the festival will be held in two districts of the Jurmala city, namely Jaunkemeri and Majori.
The event will include the following tournaments:
Tournament A: Feb. 16-17 (qualifier) and Feb. 18-19 (final). The final will be held at the Amber Beach Resort in Jaunkemeri. It will feature 8 players: four Super GMs by invitation and the top four from the qualifier. As of now there are four confirmed Super GMs:

Alexander Morozevich (Russia)
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbajan)
Alexei Shirov who as of Jan 1, 2012 will be representing Latvia.
The time control is 15 minutes plus 6 seconds per move.
Prizes for the final are: 1st: €1250, 2nd: €825, 3rd: €600, 4th: €400, 5th: €300, 6th: €250 7th €225, 8th €200, for the total of €4050.
The preliminary tournament (9 rounds; Swiss system; time control 15 minutes plus 6 seconds per move) will be held in Jurmala City museum. It is open to all who pay the entry fee.
Special prizes by nomination include: best result for women, juniors born no later than 1992, and players rated below 2250: €50 for each category. There are also two prizes for players rated 2251-2500: 1th: €60, 2nd: €40. Prizes are not divided, each player can only receive one prize. The total prize fund for the preliminary tournament is €3850.
