SAINT LOUIS, August 11, 2011 -- Former World Champion Grandmaster Anatoly Karpov will join the Kings team in the upcoming Kings vs. Queens tournament, scheduled to be held in Saint Louis September 9-16.
The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is hosting the tournament to coincide with the grand opening of the World Chess Hall of Fame, which will open to the public on September 9 in Saint Louis. Kings vs. Queens: A Battle of the Sexes will feature some of the top chess players in the world in a 5-on-5 team event.
The players, including FIDE ratings and the federation each represents, are as follows:

Karpov replaces GM Timur Gareyev on board two for the Kings. IM Martha Fierro of Ecuador will serve as an alternate for the queens.
The Russian Chess Federation is organizing a number of events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the 6th World Champion Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik (17 August 1911 - 5 May 1995).
Besides the grande event with the World's top players and a strong open in Sankt Petersburg, the RCF is hosting a seniors' tournament from 15th to 19th August in Suzdal-Vladimir Oblast. Legendary players from Botvinnik era compete in the round robin rapid tournament with the time control of 25min + 10 sec/move.
Former World Champion Boris Spassky was set to make an appearance but eventually GM Oleg Chernikov took his place.
After six rounds of play Viktor Korchnoi took a convincing lead with five points, full point and a half ahead of the group of players.
Chief arbiter is Yuri Averbakh. The prize fund is 14200 EUR.

The 21st World Senior Chess Championships is being played in Opatija, Croatia, from November 14, 2011 (arrival of the participants) until November 27, 2011 (day of departure).
The Championship is organized by the Chess club “Rijeka” in agreement with Croatian Chess Federation, under the auspices of the Mountain-litoral County, the City of Rijeka and the City of Opatija.
The championship will be based on 11 rounds of Swiss system in accordance with the FIDE Tournament Rules and FIDE Rules of Chess.

Боднарук в финальном матче соревнований нанесла поражение москвичке Варваре Саулиной со счетом 2:0.
В соревновании мужчин почетный трофей разыграют уфимец Денис Хисматуллин и москвич Вадим Звягинцев.
