Abstract. We consider a ‘thought experiment’ in which particles are confined to move
on fractal trajectories in both space and time, treating the case of a Peano-Moore trajectory
in detail. Generalising these results, we use the classical principle of relativity and a
correspondence principle to show that fractal trajectories in space with Hausdorff
dimension D = 2 exhibit both an uncertainty principle and a de Broglie relation. The
incorporation of fractal time with D = 2 places an upper bound on the macroscopic
velocities of ‘fractalons’, which in turn requires that the macroscopic physics be Lorentz
covariant. On a microscopic scale, the presence of fractal time is interpreted in terms of
the appearance of particle-antiparticle pairs when observation energies become of the
order of mc2.
We propose two field equation descriptions of fractalons based on random walk
space-time trajectories and subsequently relate these equations to the free particle
Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations respectively.
Fractals in Physiology and Medicine
ARY L. GOLDBERGER, M.D.,a AND BRUCE J. WEST, Ph.D.b
Nonlinear dynamics, a branch of the basic sciences that studies complex physical systems,
offers novel approaches to long-standing problems of physiological form and function. The
nonlinear concept of fractals, introduced and developed over the last decade, provides insights into
the organization of complex structures such as the tracheobronchial tree and heart, as well as into
the dynamics of healthy physiological variability. Alterations in fractal scaling may underlie a
number of pathophysiological disturbances, including sudden cardiac death syndromes.
Time–Entanglement
Between Mind and Matter
Hans Primas
ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Abstract
This contribution explores Wolfgang Pauli’s idea that mind and
matter are complementary aspects of the same reality. We adopt the
working hypothesis that there is an undivided timeless primordial
reality (the primordial “one world”). Breaking its symmetry, we obtain
a contextual description of the holistic reality in terms of two
categorically different domains, one tensed and the other tenseless.
The tensed domain includes, in addition to tensed time, nonmaterial
processes and mental events. The tenseless domain refers to
matter and physical energy. This concept implies that mind cannot
be reduced to matter, and that matter cannot be reduced to mind.
The non-Boolean logical framework of modern quantum theory
is general enough to implement this idea. Time is not taken
to be an a priori concept, but an archetypal acausal order is assumed
which can be represented by a one-parameter group of automorphisms,
generating a time operator which parametrizes all
processes, whether material or nonmaterial. The time-reversal symmetry
is broken in the nonmaterial domain, resulting in a universal
direction of time for the material domain as well.

Fractional diffusion equation for fractal-time-continuous-time random walks
P.A. Alemany
Abstract
It is pointed out that the spherical symmetric diffusion equation of fractional order for the time, recently proposed by E.Roman and Giona [J.Phys.A 25(1992)2107–2117]:
corresponds, for integer spatial dimensions d = 1 and d = 3, to the long time description of a the fractal-time continuous-time random- walk, in which the interjump density has the asymptotic form (t) t1, with 0 = 2/dw 1.
Fractional master equations and fractal time random walks
R. Hilfer
L. Anton
Fractional master equations containing fractional time derivatives of order 01 are introduced on the basis of a recent classification of time generators in ergodic theory. It is shown that fractional master equations are contained as a special case within the traditional theory of continuous time random walks. The corresponding waiting time density (t) is obtained exactly as (t)=(t-1/C)E,(-t/C), where E,(x) is the generalized Mittag-Leffler function. This waiting time distribution is singular both in the long time as well as in the short time limit.
Evaluation of the dispersional analysis method for fractal time series
James B. Bassingthwaighte and Gary M. Raymond
Fractal signals can be characterized by their fractal dimension plus some measure of their variance at a given level of resolution. The Hurst exponent,H, is 0.5 for rough anticorrelated series, 0.5 for positively correlated series, and =0.5 for random, white noise series. Several methods are available: dispersional analysis, Hurst rescaled range analysis, autocorrelation measures, and power special analysis. Short data sets are notoriously difficult to characterize; research to define the limitations of the various methods is incomplete. This numerical study of fractional Brownian noise focuses on determining the limitations of the dispersional analysis method, in particular, assessing the effects of signal length and of added noise on the estimate of the Hurst coefficient,H, (which ranges from 0 to 1 and is 2-D, whereD is the fractal dimension). There are three general conclusions: (i) pure fractal signals of length greater than 256 points give estimates ofH that are biased but have standard deviations less than 0.1; (ii) the estimates ofH tend to be biased towardH=0.5 at both highH (0.8) and lowH (0.5), and biases are greater for short time series than for long; and (iii) the addition of Gaussian noise (H=0.5) degrades the signals: for those with negative correlation (H0.5) the degradation is great, the noise has only mild degrading effects on signals withH0.6, and the method is particularly robust for signals with highH and long series, where even 100% noise added has only a few percent effect on the estimate ofH. Dispersional analysis can be regarded as a strong method for characterizing biological or natural time series, which generally show long-range positive correlation.

Analyzing exact fractal time series: evaluating dispersional analysis and rescaled range methods
David C. Caccia, Donald Percival, Michael J. Cannon, Gary Raymond and James B. Bassingthwaighte
Precise reference signals are required to evaluate methods for characterizing a fractal time series. Here we use fGp (fractional Gaussian process) to generate exact fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) reference signals for one-dimensional time series. The average autocorrelation of multiple realizations of fGn converges to the theoretically expected autocorrelation. Two methods, commonly used to generate fractal time series, an approximate spectral synthesis (SSM) method and the successive random addition (SRA) method, do not give the correct correlation structures and should be abandoned. Time series from fGp were used to test how well several versions of rescaled range analysis (R/S) and dispersional analysis (Disp) estimate the Hurst coefficient (0 H 1.0). Disp is unbiased for H 0.9 and series length N 1024, but underestimates H when H 0.9 R/S-detrended overestimates H for time series with H 0.7 and underestimates H for H 0.7. Estimates of from all versions of Disp usually have lower bias and variance than those from R/S. All versions of dispersional analysis, Disp, now tested on fGp, are better than we previously thought and are recommended for evaluating time series as long-memory processes.
