Показывается, что эти связи существенно изменяются в зависимости от того, как решается первая проблема, т.е. какая интерпретация квантовой механики выбирается. Quantum Zeno Effect Underpinning the Radical-Ion-Pair Mechanism of Avian Magnetoreception

Abstract: The intricate biochemical processes underlying avian magnetoreception, the sensory ability of migratory birds to navigate using earths magnetic field, have been narrowed down to spin-dependent recombination of radical-ion pairs to be found in avian species retinal proteins. The avian magnetic field detection is governed by the interplay between magnetic interactions of the radicals unpaired electrons and the radicals recombination dynamics. Critical to this mechanism is the long lifetime of the radical-pair spin coherence, so that the weak geomagnetic field will have a chance to signal its presence. It is here shown that a fundamental quantum phenomenon, the quantum Zeno effect, is at the basis of the radical-ion-pair magnetoreception mechanism. The quantum Zeno effect naturally leads to long spin coherence lifetimes, without any constraints on the systems physical parameters, ensuring the robustness of this sensory mechanism. Basic experimental observations regarding avian magnetic sensitivity are seamlessly derived. These include the magnetic sensitivity functional window and the heading error of oriented bird ensembles, which so far evaded theoretical justification. The findings presented here could be highly relevant to similar mechanisms at work in photosynthetic reactions. They also trigger fundamental questions about the evolutionary mechanisms that enabled avian species to make optimal use of quantum measurement laws.

I spent twenty years studying how computer-like structures called microtubules inside neurons and other cells could process information related to consciousness. But when I read The emperor’s new mind by Sir Roger Penrose in 1991 I realized that consciousness may be a specific process on the edge between the quantum and classical worlds. Roger and I teamed up to develop a theory of consciousness based on quantum computation in microtubules within neurons. Roger’s mechanism for an objective threshold for quantum state reduction connects us to the most basic, “funda-mental” level of the universe at the Planck scale, and is called objective reduction (OR). Our suggestion for biological feedback to microtubule quantum states is orchestration (Orch), hence our model is called orchestrated objective reduction, Orch OR.

The loss of coherence in quantum mechanical superposition states limits the time for which quantum information remains useful. Similarly, it limits the distance over which quantum information can be transmitted. Here, we investigate in a nuclear spin-based quantum simulator, the localization of the size of spin clusters that are generated by a Hamiltonian driving the transmission of information, while a variable-strength perturbation counteracts the spreading. We find that the system reaches a dynamic equilibrium size, which decreases with the square of the perturbation strength.

We propose an efficient approach for deterministically generating scalable cluster states with photons. This approach involves unitary transformations performed on atoms coupled to optical cavities. Its operation cost scales linearly with the number of qubits in the cluster state, and photon qubits are encoded such that single-qubit operations can be easily implemented by using linear optics. Robust optical one-way quantum computation can be performed since cluster states can be stored in atoms and then transferred to photons that can be easily operated and measured. Therefore, this proposal could help in performing robust large-scale optical one-way quantum computation.

A single broadband squeezed field constitutes a quantum communication resource that is sufficient for the realization of a large number N of quantum channels based on distributed Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled states. Each channel can serve as a resource for, for example, independent quantum key distribution or teleportation protocols. N-fold channel multiplexing can be realized by accessing 2N squeezed modes at different Fourier frequencies. We report on the experimental implementation of the N=1 case through the interference of two squeezed states, extracted from a single broadband squeezed field, and demonstrate all techniques required for multiplexing (N1). Quantum channel frequency multiplexing can be used to optimize the exploitation of a broadband squeezed field in a quantum information task. For instance, it is useful if the bandwidth of the squeezed field is larger than the bandwidth of the homodyne detectors. This is currently a typical situation in many experiments with squeezed and two-mode squeezed entangled light.

We argue that, in a second-order quantum phase transition driven by an inhomogeneous quench, the density of quasi-particle excitations is suppressed when velocity at which a critical point propagates across a system falls below a threshold velocity equal to the Kibble–Zurek correlation length times the energy gap at freeze-out divided by [h-bar]. This general prediction is supported by an analytic solution in the quantum Ising chain. Our results suggest, in particular, that adiabatic quantum computers can be made more adiabatic when operated in an `inhomogeneous' way.

The polarization entanglement photon pairs generated from the biexciton cascade decay in a single semiconductor quantum dot is distorted due to the fine structure splitting. We show that, frequency of light can be shifted when it passes through an electro-optic modulator under voltage ramping. Based on this, we can realize polarization-dependent frequency shift and the hidden entanglement due to fine structure splitting can be revealed.

We explore quantum entanglement among the chlorophyll molecules in light-harvesting complex II, which is the most abundant photosynthetic antenna complex in plants containing over 50% of the world's chlorophyll molecules. Our results demonstrate that there exists robust quantum entanglement under physiological conditions for the case of a single elementary excitation. However, this nonvanishing entanglement is not unexpected because entanglement in the single-excitation manifold is conceptually the same as quantum delocalized states, which are the spectroscopically detectable energy eigenstates of the system. We discuss the impact of the surrounding environments and correlated fluctuations in electronic energies of different pigments upon quantum delocalization and quantum entanglement. It is demonstrated that investigations with tools quantifying the entanglement can provide us with more detailed information on the nature of quantum delocalization, in particular the so-called dynamic localization, which is difficult for a traditional treatment to capture.

We investigate the dynamical relations among entanglement, mixedness, and nonlocality, quantified by concurrence C, purity P, and maximum Bell function B, respectively, in a system of two qubits in a common structured reservoir. To this aim we introduce the C-P-B parameter space and analyze the time evolution of the point representative of the system state in such a space. The dynamical interplay among entanglement, mixedness, and nonlocality strongly depends on the initial state of the system. For a two-excitation Bell state the representative point draws a multibranch curve in the C-P-B space and we show that a closed relation among these quantifiers does not hold. By extending the known relation between C and B for pure states, we give an expression among the three quantifiers for mixed states. In this equation we introduce a quantity, vanishing for pure states, which in general does not have a closed form in terms of C, P and B. Finally, we demonstrate that for an initial one-excitation Bell state, a closed C-P-B relation instead exists and the system evolves, remaining always a maximally entangled mixed state.

Light-harvesting components of photosynthetic organisms are complex, coupled, many-body quantum systems, in which electronic coherence has recently been shown to survive for relatively long timescales, despite the decohering effects of their environments. Here, we analyse entanglement in multichromophoric light-harvesting complexes, and establish methods for quantification of entanglement by describing necessary and sufficient conditions for entanglement and by deriving a measure of global entanglement. These methods are then applied to the Fenna–Matthews–Olson protein to extract the initial state and temperature dependencies of entanglement. We show that, although the Fenna–Matthews–Olson protein in natural conditions largely contains bipartite entanglement between dimerized chromophores, a small amount of long-range and multipartite entanglement should exist even at physiological temperatures. This constitutes the first rigorous quantification of entanglement in a biological system. Finally, we discuss the practical use of entanglement in densely packed molecular aggregates such as light-harvesting complexes.

A network is frustrated when competing interactions between nodes prevent each bond from being satisfied. This compromise is central to the behaviour of many complex systems, from social and neural networks to protein folding and magnetism. Frustrated networks have highly degenerate ground states, with excess entropy and disorder even at zero temperature. In the case of quantum networks, frustration can lead to massively entangled ground states, underpinning exotic materials such as quantum spin liquids and spin glasses. Here we realize a quantum simulation of frustrated Ising spins in a system of three trapped atomic ions, whose interactions are precisely controlled using optical forces. We study the ground state of this system as it adiabatically evolves from a transverse polarized state, and observe that frustration induces extra degeneracy. We also measure the entanglement in the system, finding a link between frustration and ground-state entanglement. This experimental system can be scaled to simulate larger numbers of spins, the ground states of which (for frustrated interactions) cannot be simulated on a classical computer.

Two years ago, researchers led by then-University of California at Berkeley chemist Greg Engel found coherence in the antenna proteins of green sulfur bacteria. But their observations were made at temperatures below minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit, useful for slowing ultrafast quantum activities but leaving open the question of whether coherence operates in everyday conditions.
The Nature findings, made at room temperature in common marine algae, show that it does. Moreover, similar results from an experiment on another, simpler light-harvesting structure, announced by Engel’s group last Thursday on the pre-publication online arXiv, suggest that photosynthetic coherence is routine.
The findings are wondrous in themselves, adding a new dimension to something taught — incompletely, it now seems — to every high school biology student. They also have important implications for designers of solar cells and computers, who could benefit from quantum physics conducted in nonfrigid conditions.
“There’s every reason to believe this is a general phenomenon,” said Engel, now at the University of Chicago. He called Scholes’ finding “an extraordinary result” that “shows us a new way to use quantum effects at high temperatures.”
Scholes’ team experimented on an antenna protein called PC645, already imaged at the atomic scale in earlier studies. That precise characterization allowed them to target molecules with laser pulses lasting for one-quadrillionth of a second, or just long enough to set single electrons spinning.

Molecules are the basis of life. They can consider as a quantum system. So it is necessary to enter quantum mechanic in biological discussion. In this paper we consider the DNA molecules as a quantum system. We discussed about the relation between the heredity, biology and DNA and quantum systems. We also find a relation between the quantum information and some bio-process such as cell division, heredity, cloning. Finally we conclude that in cell division, DNA-replication and cloning all information in DNA are different.

Scientists are reporting evidence that contrary to our current beliefs about what is possible, intact double-stranded DNA has the “amazing” ability to recognize similarities in other DNA strands from a distance. Somehow they are able to identify one another, and the tiny bits of genetic material tend to congregate with similar DNA. The recognition of similar sequences in DNA’s chemical subunits, occurs in a way unrecognized by science. There is no known reason why the DNA is able to combine the way it does, and from a current theoretical standpoint this feat should be chemically impossible.

A new theoretical model suggests that quantum entanglement helps prevent the molecules of life from breaking apart.

Quantum events that defy linear time take place within our cells continually. DNA’s intelligence operates simultaneously in the past, present, and future. From the past it takes the blueprint of life, applying to the present only the tiniest fraction of the information needed for cellular function (perhaps a billionth of its total data base), and reserving for the future the information that will be relevant years from now.
The double helix is the quantum storehouse of your future; here time is compressed and locked away until needed. At the instant you were conceived, your genes gained control of an entire lifetime of events that would unfold in precise sequence. At the quantum level, you live all these ages at once.
At this moment you are in two places at once. One is the visible, sensual world, where your body is subject to all the forces of nature “out there.” But you also occupy the quantum world, where all things change.

As previously mentioned, true “Bio-quantum physics”, introduces important new theoretical elements of Genetic information . In fact Gene-Ons communication radically changes our understanding of the workings of the DNA/RNA catalytic system by means of a transformation of information energy. This is because Gene-Ons carried out at distance by means of codified quantum energy, contain a series of specific frequencies exactly complemented by the gene clipped and glued from DNA through the RNA system. The effective presence of Gene-Ons can be identified through fast spectroscopy methods which are able to detect the very low frequencies produced by the breaking of H-Bonds of the base pairs, e. g. A-T (- bridging by a double H-Bonds) and C-G ( containing triple H-bonds ). This can be experimentally difficult but not impossible. A fundamental requirement is to now find a correspondence between theory and fact. Today, advancement in cognitive neuro-sciences consider man (male and female) an integral part of the communication of the Universe. Neurological cognitive sciences will bring about a radical change in our understanding of what information is working in nature and must also have wide repercussions in our knowledge of our relationship to the rest of the universe11. In truth, the fundamental basis of the unity of science is found in Aristotle (340 BC). He said : “Metaphysics is universal and is exclusively concerned with primary substance”. We definitely need to keep in mind that he identified information as something that is more primitive than energy and matter. His concept of information as a coherent physical intermediate state associated with the transformation of different forms of energy and matter in microscopic states is needed to develop a new approach in theoretical quantum-bio-physics. Information energy (I) must pre-exist to impact on physical reality. Thinking about quantum bio-information, the re-composition of subject and object into an holistic domain of science permits us to think that every mind-brain transformation would be considered an activity coming from virtual reality. Therefore (I) can be conceived as a potential matrix of information-energy. The collapse of the wave/particle duality can be seen as the transformation of the potential information energy in “…ons” quantum particles, which are able to interact as effective vector-forces in Euclidean space.
