Insect Antenna Vibrating Frequency Modulator And Resonating Maserlike Ir Emitter
A system or method by which electromagnetic wave energy in the near, intermediate, and far infrared portion of spectrum from insect sex scent attractants and host plant or animal scent attractants is converted into narrow band high intensity maserlike infrared emissions is disclosed. The system or method includes a low frequency oscillator for vibrating a silver or gold coated or aluminum low emissivity reed in a vacuum chamber with a suitable infrared window (1 to 30 mu m). The reed vibrator is prepared with a monomolecular layer of suitable insect sex or host attractant or surrounded by vapors of said attractants and vibrated (modulated) in an infrared source of electromagnetic energy at 1 to 30 mu m and at the antenna vibrating frequency of the insect. The narrow band maserlike emission and harmonies thereof are emitted through the IR window and detected by a spectrometer.

Photonic Ionic Cloth Radio Amplifier
A method and apparatus for detecting radio waves that propagate along the atmospheric boundary layer of human skin. This function is realized with the use of a photonic cloth constructed of flax and wool, soaked in a saline solution and air dried, and subsequently placed upon the human skin. The radio waves can then be monitored by connecting the photonic cloth via a set of probes to an oscilloscope.

Solid-state Organic Maser

A solid-state, paramagnetic-diamagnetic maser for controlling the amplification and direction of electromagnetic emissions from a molecular control system, such as insect pheromones. The solid-state maser includes a paramagnetic layer of, for example, a mixture of andosite, basalt and granite. The paramagnetic layer is disposed onto a diamagnetic base. A burlap or hairy cloth impregnated with the molecular control system is placed over the paramagnetic layer, such that the paramagnetic energy amplifies the molecular control system to produce coherent or semi-coherent electromagnetic emissions. The molecular control system can be a semiochemical (such as, insect pheromones), garlic scent, perfume, deodorant, air freshener, similar molecules, infrared coded emissions from any system that controls or effects living organisms, and the like. Insect Trap With Reflective Interior Walls

A system and method are provided to control the amplification of natural frequencies emanating from molecules, specifically insect sex pheromones. The pheromone molecules are deposited in a resonant cavity that allows the generation of coherent and/or semi-coherent radiation. The molecular emissions are amplified in the resonant cavity and allowed to escape through a small circular opening on top of the resonant cavity. The molecules and/or their emissions dissipate into the surroundings to attract insects towards the cavity. When the insect enters the resonant cavity, a trap door prevents the insect from exiting. The molecular emissions are produced by passive diffusion and passive amplification because no pumping radiation source is required. However pumping radiation can be integrated to assist the passive amplification or serve as a second attractant.

Intermediate and Far Infrared Sensing of Nocturnal Insects. Part I. Evidences for a Far Infrared (FIR) Electromagnetic Theory of Cummunication and Sen
A theory of communication and location between individuals of opposite sexes of the corn earworm moth, Heliothis zea (Boddie), is presented. The efficiency of such a system is related to physical factors present in the adult earworm environment. The thoracic temperature of the corn earworm can rise from 1° to 8.8°F above ambient temperature and that of the Sphingidae, Abbot's pine sphinx, Lapara coniferarum (J. E. Smith), 17.8°F above the ambient temperature. Thoracic temperatures depend on frequency and amplitude of wing beat. The calculated far infrared (FIR) output associated with the temperature differential was shown to lie between 9 and 11 μ, an area where there is an infrared transmission window in the water vapor of the air. The earworm and other noctuids fly during periods when the water saturation in grams per cubic meter of water is lowest. This condition increases efficiency of transmission in the IR window.

The inverse square law states that “the intensity of radiation emitted from a point source varies as the inverse square of the distance between the source and the receiver”; thus, halving the distance of a detector, e.g., a male earworm, from a point source of energy, e.g., a female earworm, would quadruple the FIR energy received by the male. (These factors of the inverse square law and the FIR water vapor window plus the fact that the earworm radiates in this window, lead to the conclusion that FIR radiation would be an efficient method of location between sexes over great distances.)

Data collected over the years and in different areas show that the highest percentage of mating for the earworm occurs when highest efficiency of the FIR window (based on the physical weather environment) was attained. Noctuid activity decreases during moonlight at ⅗ to full moon when high FIR radiation from the moon would be expected to interfere with reception between moths. The earworm antennae were shown to have organs with measurements and configurations of FIR resonators. Configurations useful in the 1–5 μ band and 6 μ band also are present and may be tuned for intermediate infrared (IIR) pickup of emitting molecules of sex releaser or feeding and host plant substances.

The male earworm responds to the female earworm by feeling the 8th and 9th abdominal segments with both antennae and labial palpi. Because the response takes place within very close quarters and upon contact, the author considers it to be a response to a releaser (i.e., an identification substance) and not to a long distance attractant. These evidences lead to the conclusion that long-distance communication and location are by FIR radiation and that close-in identification for mating and feeding is by IIR pickup of scent molecules. In all probability a similar means of communication is used by other species of noctuids and sphingids, but the corn earworm is used in this example because the author has collected considerable data on this species

Far infra-red emission and detection by night-flying moths
I HAVE earlier postulated1,2 a completely new concept of the insect environment based on infra-red frequency transmission through infra-red atmospheric windows. This concept involves the utilization of such transmitted frequencies in the life cycle and behaviour of night-flying moths. I postulated that moths may locate their mates, chemical releasers (scents), and host plants by means of infra-red frequency detection and that the night-adapted eye of nocturnal moths shifts slowly from the short-wave visible spectrum of daylight to the longer and longer infra-red frequencies as it becomes night-adapted. When totally dark-adapted, it attains the configuration of a mosaic optic-electromagnetic thermal radiometer for night-time detection of infra-red frequencies. I further postulated that the antennal spines may be resonant cavities for infra-red detection. Laithwaite3 has postulated a similar theory for the assembling of moths. In testing the validity that a moth might locate its mate by thermal far infra-red, the following experiments were performed:

A Photoelectric-Photographic Analysis of Flight Behavior in the Corn Earworm, Heliothis zea, and other Moths
A photoelectric-photographic study was made of flight activity of the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), and other Noctuidae and also of some species of Sphingidae and one of Arctiidae. Photographs were obtained of wing configuration and positioning of appendages in free flight. Relationships between wing pitch, wing loading, and frequency of beat were determined. It was demonstrated that both wing pitch and wing load parameters vary considerably during harsh flight maneuvers, and that the study of the aerodynamic parameters of tethered flight do not necessarily represent free flight. Antennae are stable in flight but vibrate at the same frequency as the wings. With regard to attraction between sexes by electromagnetic radiation, stability of antennae, and proboscis response of earworm moths to a photoelectric window provided provocative evidence that further carefully instrumented experiments, especially in the infrared spectrum, are warranted.
