Karpov leading 1.5-0.5 after the first day

Anatoly Karpov wins the first game of the match by applying his trademarked squeeze. Miljkovic defended with Slav, but Karpov was able to open the position and transform the advantage of Bishops pair into better pawn structure and Rook breach to the 7th rank. White eventually won on 72nd move. The City Hall was literally packed with spectators. (Scroll down to replay the games)

The second game of the match, in which Miljkovic led white pieces, ended in a draw on move 35. After the opening moves of the Queen's Gambit Declined, Karpov initiated simplifications with massive exchanges on the d5-square. He was left with the isolated pawn but defended the position comfortably. The former world champion is leading by 1.5-0.5 and the third game will be played on Saturday at 15:00 local time.

Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov continued the series of speed-chess events with a six-games match against IM Miroslav Miljkovic (elo 2506), which was played on 3rd and 4th December in Ni, Serbia.

Four games were played with the time control of 25 min+10 sec per player while the remaining two were blitz with 5 min+2 sec per player. Anatoly Karpov won the match with the convincing 5-1, but credit is due to Miljkovic who forced complications in several equal games.

20th Torneo Magistral Internacional de Elgoibar
14th to 21st December in Elgoibar , Spain

The 20th Torneo Magistral Internacional de Elgoibar is being played from 14th to 21st December in Elgoibar, Spain. Ten players compete in the round robin tournament.

San Sebastian's IM Argandoa Iigo surprised the top seeded GM Oleg Korneev, winner of the six Elgoibar tournaments, and inflicted him a loss in the first round. Another Grandmaster tripped, as Euskadi and Gipuzkoa champion IM Alejandro Franco defeated Dragan Paunovic.

Remembering Paul Keres Chess Tournament was played on 7th-9th January in Tallinn, Estonia. Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov and legendary Hungarian Grandmaster Lajos Portish were also in Estonia, participating in the events dedicated to marking 95 years from Paul Keres' birth. Estonia President Toomas Hendrik Ilves met with the famous chess players.

The four top finishers from the Preliminary tournament, which was played over seven rounds on 7th and 8th January, were supposed to join GM Alexei Shirov (ESP 2722), GM Jaan Ehlvest (USA 2586), GM Elshan Moradiabadi (IRI 2558) and IM Aleksandr Volodin (EST 2487) in the final round-robin tournament.

The Final event was played on 8th and 9th January, also over seven rounds. GM Alexei Shirov conceded only two draws and convincingly won the tournament with 6 points.

he 1st Cento International Chess Open started today at the comfortable Congress Hall in the Grand Hotel Bologna in Cento. 102 players from 20 countries, among them 16 Grandmasters, are competing in the 9-round swiss event with the fantastic prize fund of 26.000 EUR. Alexey Dreev (RUS 2694) and Ivan Sokolov (NED 2657) are top seeded.

Most of the elo favourites converted the rating differences of a couple of hundred points into first round victories. However, GM Eduardas Rozentalis of Lithuania, at 2588 elo seeded 4th in the tournament, was stunned by the ultra-talented WIM Marina Brunello (2155).

The 1st Cento Open concluded today with the trophies being awarded at the central stage of the European Carnival and in front of thousands of cheering visitors. The top three games finished in draws, and thus three players shared the first place with 7 points each.

The world-class Grandmaster and top seed in Cento, GM Alexey Dreev, was declared the champion on best tiebreak score. The second place goes to GM David Alberto, who was the sole leader through the middle of the tournament, and GM Roland Salvador claims the third after the crucial victory against GM Elina Danielan in the penultimate round.
